The most abundant protein in the human body, collagen, is found in tendons, bones, muscles, and skin. “It is the substance that holds the body together. Collagen forms a scaffold to provide strength and structure” and it performs a number of important functions. By acting as support structures and “cell anchors”, if you will, collagen gives the skin strength and elasticity. “It also plays a role in replacing and restoring dead skin cells. Some collagens [also] act as protective coverings for delicate organs in the body, such as the kidneys.” However, as the body ages, it naturally starts to produce less collagen, especially after age 60. Women in particular see a drop in collagen production after menopause. As a result, people can see a decline in the structural integrity of their skin, which is when wrinkles form and cartilage weakens.
